Etymology

Holmfirth Urban District includes the townships of Austonley, Holme, Honley, Netherthong and Upperthong from this parish as well as the townships of Cartworth, Fulstone, Hepworth, Scholes, Wooldale and part of Thurstonland from Kirkburton parish (236supra ). Meltham Urban District contains Meltham township and part of South Crosland. Colne Valley Urban District includes Linthwaite and Marsden from this parish and Golcar, Scammonden and Slaithwaite from Huddersfield parish (291infra ).Almondbury, Lockwood and part of South Crosland are now in the County Borough of Huddersfield (295infra ); Farnley Tyas is a ward in Kirkburton Urban District.
