Etymology

Lower Thorpe, Thorp (e )l. 13, 1323 YD iii, 1379 PT (p)et freq to 1817 M, Upper Thorp (e ) and Lower Thorp (e )1822 Langd, the Thorpe 1509WB 13, v. þorp 'an outlying farmstead'. Upper Thorpe is now Thorpe Grange; cf. Finthorpe infra .
