Etymology

Stoneland in this parish (Stonelandys in 1546 SRS 20) and Stonehurst (6″) in Ardingly, earlier Stone Place (c. 1550Malling CtBk ), are parts of an earlier estate, the home of Wm at (t )e Stone in 1296 and 1327 (SR). The stone is that known locally as 'Big upon Little' ('Great upon Little' on the 6″ map) on the West Hoathly side of the brook which divides that parish from Ardingly. It may be that this is the wellinga stan mentioned next after Chiddingly supra 271 in BCS 197. If so, that name should be interpreted as 'stone of the dwellers by the stream' (v. ing , wielle ), a very appropriate name for this particular stone.
