Etymology

Cob Brook (6″) is to be associated with Colbemelne (1308 BM), the lb being an error for bb , and with Cob Lane leading from Hoathly to Ardingly. The tradition of the 'mill' survives in the local 'Old Mill Shaw.' All alike contain the OE  pers. name Cobba . For this name v. Cobley, PN Wo 362.
