Etymology

Scratchings Fm is Cratchings in 1620Ipm (VCH ). This is probably the common dialectal cratchings or scratchings (EDD s. vv .),' refuse from melting down pig's fat.' Such a word might be used as a contemptuous nickname for a farm. For forms with and without initial s , cf. Ritter in Herrig's Archiv 116, 43 ff.
