Etymology

Idolsfold Fm (6″) is earlier Islesfold 1324, 1340 FF, 1327 SR (all p), and probably contains a pers. name Īsel , not on independent record. For such a name v. PN Bk 222 and Ilsham infra 139. The neighbouring Isling Bridge (6″), for which no early forms have been found, clearly contains the same pers. name. The local form for this name is Is-land bridge (ex inf. the Rev. G. N. Standish), which must be for Iselesland . The modern form Idolsfold is a corruption of the more correct development to Iselsfold .
