Etymology

Hardnip's Barn (6″) probably takes its name from the family of Richard de Herdekneppe (1239 FF) and Thomas de Hardeknappe (1272Ass ). The name may be of local origin. There are one or two wooded 'knaps' or knolls of ground in the neighbourhood, v. cnæpp .
