Staffhurst Wood is Stefhurst 1235, 1263, Staffhurst 1279, Stafhurst 1312Ass (all p), Stafherstwode 1312AOMB , Staffyrsteswode 1418Harl , Staffirsteswode 1430 SAC vi, Staffordswood 1757Egerton . This name is a compound of OE  stæf, 'rod, staff' and hyrst , perhaps referring to a wood which supplied material for such. Cf. Velhurst supra 224.
