, named from a former ford across Swindale Beck on the road to Kirkby Stephen , now replaced by a bridge ( prec . ) ; it is possibly the source of the family name Cotesford which has a variant Cotelesford 13Musg ( cf. Asbyii, 54supra ) and which contains the ME  surn. Cotel ( Reaney79 ) , as in Frampton Cotterell (Gl iii, 116) , v. ford ; Colt - would be an inverted or metathesised spelling .
