Etymology

Skirrygill, 1775 PR(B), Scrythergill , Skrythergill , -gyll 1402, 1422 IpmR, Skerrigill 1724 PR(Wp). The first el. can hardly be ON  skrið(a) 'land-slide, scree', as this is either a neut. noun (gen.sg. *skriðs ) or a fem. (gen.sg. skriðu ), and the topography of the farm (grid 84–848135) does not favour such an interpretation. But it is possible that the first el. is a metathesised form of an ON  *skyrðr 'cutting, ditch, channel' (gen.sg. skyrðar ), corresponding to OSwed  skyrþ , ODan  skyrdh and the unmutated ON  skurðr . v. gil .
