Verterae

Early-attested site in the Parish of Brough

Etymology

Verterae, Verteris 4 Antlt, NotDig, 7 Rav, the Latin name of the Roman fort at Church Brough, a large rectangular fort with various remains, described by Ferguson 49, E. Birley in CW lviii, 31–56 (cf. also CW v, 291, viii, 171, 205, etc.); the site is enclosed on three sides by Swindale Beck. The name is obscure, but I. Williams (in Rav 48) suggests a root meaning 'summit'.
