Etymology

Rise Brigg Syke (lost), 1823 M, -sike 1687BdyR , Risbrigg als. Risprigg 1626FF , a frequent p.n. meaning 'track over marshland reinforced with brushwood', v. hrīs , brycg , a method of road- making already used in the county in Roman times (cf. Road II, i, 19 supra ); here it refers to part of the main road over Stainmore, and the name is now replaced by Rowtonbridge Sike on the county boundary.
