Old Man of Mow

Other OS name in the Parish of Astbury

Etymology

, a prominence at the highest point on Mow Cophill supra . The name might be from dial . man ' a cairn ' ( EDD, NED ) , cf. maen and La 194 , but a figurative origin seems likely , for JCJ explains that the Old Man of Mow is a pillar of rock left standing by the millstone quarrymen in the nineteenth century .
