, 1831 Bry , The Bridestones 1882 Orm2 , apparently from brȳd ' a bride ' and stān ' a stone ' ; the remains of a megalithic burial - mound , v. Varley 34 . There are , of course , local legends associated with the site ( Orm 2 iii 43 n. , cf. also Antiquity xii 351 – 3 ) , but the name is typical , occurring elsewhere in the country as a name for megalithic groups etc . , cf. bride-stones ( EDD and F . K . Robinson , A glossary of words used in the neighbourhood of Whitby , EDS 1873 ) , also Bride StonesWRY 3174, 773 .
