Etymology

'The clearings', v. rod 1 , hǣð , hall , cf. North Rode 159. Rode Heath is liable to confusion with Rudheath 198supra , 1 11, since the Runchamp family of Lostock Gralam had manorial interests in both places. The affix Hode -, Odde - is a confusion of the by-name of a former tenant of the manor, 'Adam dictus Hod de Odderode '1286AddCh 37105 (from ME  hod 'a hood', cf. hōd and the surname Hood ), with the OE  pers.n. Odda (cf. DEPN), or with ME  odde 'odd, the odd one of three, the third', thence 'unique, standing alone' (from 1330 NED). It distinguishes this place from North Rode, and perhaps also between Rode Hall and Rode Heath. Herode is 'high Rode', from hēah . Rode Close was Rode Field 1774BW , Big Rode 1839TA , v. clos . Rode Mill, 1831 Bry, was molendinum (aquaticum ) de Rode 1315AddCh , 1328, 1389BW , Rode Water -Mill 1722ib , cf. Millbank infra and le Milnelone 1329AddCh , v. myln , lane . Rode Pool, a lake, gives name to Pool End Meadow 1651BW , Pool Head Rang 1668ib , Pool Head 1786ib , Poole Place 1651ib , (the ) Pool (e ) Stead or Poole Place 1669ib , the Poolstead 1786ib , Pools Land 1743ib , v. pōl 1 , ende 1 , hēafod , pōl- stede, place , land , range . Great Moreton is with Alcumlow 304supra , and Church Lawton 320 infra is adjacent to the south-west.
