Etymology

Street Lane (110–805587 to 810578), Street Lane 1831 Bry, strata de Roda 1184 P, cheminum de Rod (a )1185, 1186 ib, possibly associated with Rodesti c.1270AddCh , Rode Lydyate , Rode Lidyate 1308ib , since the reference in P is to a toll, cf. Lawton-Gate 320infra , v. stīg 'a path, a road', strǣt 'a paved road', hlid-geat 'a swing-gate', and Rode supra . The road may be part of a Roman road from Middlewich to Chesterton St, but more probably part of the Chesterton–Warrington route, cf. 317infra , 1 43, 44. Cf. Forge Mill, which is on this road, and styfordlone infra .
