Etymology

'Sigg(e)'s dairy farm', v. wīc . The first el. is the ME  pers.n. Sigg (e ), which occurs in the 12th century as a pers.n. in Selside and Fawcett Forest (1190–1200, 1198–1200 Kend i, 231, 239); this pers.n. may be from ON  Siggi , but (in view of the later palatalised form in the p.n.) it could be from a strong form of OE  Sicga ; Sicg occurs in the 12th century in LVD 6.
