Etymology

The later forms show that this cannot be from OE  bere 'barley'.In view of the spellings with Bir -, it is possibly ON  býjar -þveit 'clearing belonging to the village' (v. , gen.sg. býjar , þveit ), as 'the green' (v. grēne 2 ) is in the village of Levens.
