Etymology

Mabbin Hall, 1815EnclA , Mabaneshou 1216–36, 1230–46 Cockers (p), Mabenhowe 1458 Kend ii, 127, Mabynhall , Mabinhall 1544, 1562 ib 132, 134, Mabynghall 1562FF , Mabben Hall 1577 Kend ii, 154. Originally 'Maban's hill or mound', v. haugr . The pers.n. is OWelsh  Mapon , Welsh  Mabon , found in its older form in NCy inscriptions in the name of Apollo Maponos (Watson 180–1); it is found in Bede and in DB (Y) as Maban (Bede v, 20, Feilitzen 323). The replacement of haugr by hall is due to an inversion after the vocalisation of -l - and occurs in other p.ns. like Capon Hall, Hesbert Hall (YW vi, 138, 168, cf. ib vii, 79§6, cf. Phonol. §3).
