Etymology

The first el. is probably a pers.n. and Ekwall has suggested OE  Hēahfrið (in a reduced form), v. hām 'homestead', with some spellings showing the influence of the cognate OE  heim. The latest dialectal forms Hearsham , etc. are noteworthy.
