Windermere

Parish in the County of Westmorland

Etymology

The ancient parish of Windermere had four divisions, Ambleside below Stock, Applethwaite, Troutbeck, and Undermillbeck. Undermillbeck included Winster (i, 178supra ), which was a chapelry of Kendal, but is now in Crook. The disposition of the place-names is according to the present civil parishes and not the old divisions.
