, 1865 OS , the Lowest Hundred , Middle Hundred 1839TA , Mr Bruce Thompson notes that the village was divided into 3 hundreds as early as 1605 ( Browne MS ) , and these were doubtless 3 hamlets which have subsequently joined up to form a straggling village ; he notes a reference in 1538 to the ' village , hundred or hamlet of Torver (La) ' in T . Ellwood , Forty - Five Years in a Mountain Parish in Lakeland ( 1908 ) for this use of hundred .
