Etymology

The strong form Hlupp of an OE  pers.n. Hluppa proposed for Lupridge D 303 would be possible in Lupset, but the origin of this pers.n. is uncertain, as there are no parallels, unless it be connected with the root of OE  hlīepan (pa.t. hlupon ) 'to leap'. But Lupset may well contain the ME  byname Lupe (from OFr  loup 'wolf'), v. hēafod 'headland', which here refers to a rounded eminence called The Mount overlooking the Calder valley.
