Etymology

Pinders Fields, Pinderfield 1709 WMB, Pindar Cross & Pindar Middle Field 1793EnclA 11, Pinder 's Field 1822 Langd. Pinders Fields lie to the north of the town. In 1556 the householders of Westgate were by custom to make a 'pyndefolde' at the end of Westgate (WfdBurg 23) and 1579 the pinder was to 'take all swine that cometh into the churche yeard & impound theym' (ib 26). This pinfold in Westgate End was obviously not connected with Pinders Fields; doubtless it was the Westgate one which is associated with the Pinder of Wakefield.
