Etymology

The first el. has been connected with the ME  pers.n. Uche quoted by Goodall 222 from Ch. This pers.n. is probably a short form of ON  Úlfketill , ME  Ulkel , etc. and would not produce first el. of Ouchthorpe. The most probable explanation of Ouchthorpe is that the first el. is OFr  (h )ouche 'garden' (from MedLat  olca 'arable land'), which is common in Fr p.ns. (cf. Vincent § 815, Gröhler 129 ff).The second el. is þorp 'outlying farmstead'; it is one of the many thorpes in this district, some of which are distinguished by OFr themes as in Chapelthorpe 102 or Painthorpe 104supra .
