Etymology

Scarnet Wood, Scarnwah 1482 RipAct, Skarne Wath 1576 Wheater, Askwin Wath als. Scaro Wath 1767 Comm. 'Dirty ford, v. skarn 'filth', vað . The site of the old ford across Thornton Beck is marked on 6″ O.S. (137 SW): it is actually in Ripley about ½ mile upstream from Scarah Bridge and about 100 yards from Scarnet Wood.Askwin - may be an old pers.n.; Scaro - is influenced by the form of Scarah Bridge 102infra .
