Etymology

Malsis Hall [ˈmɔ:sis], Malses c. 1510 Star, Malsis 1583 FF, Malsis Hall 1673 PRKld, Mawsis 1577 Holinshed, 1652FGr 23, Mawseys 1584 WillY, Mawses 1606 PRKld, Maulsis 1631 ib. This is probably a French p.n. 'bad seat', v. mal 2 , assis . It has been tentatively identified with DB Cheldis , Chelchis (Skaife 135), but neither the names nor the places would appear to be identical; Cheldis is probably from ON  kelda 'a spring', and is associated with Glusburn 18supra .
