Etymology

Brunthwaite [ˈbrumfit], Bronthweyt 1389 IpmR, Brynthwayt 1422 YI, Brunthwayte 1436 IpmR, Brunthwite 1578 PRKld, Brunthwait (e )1647 PRAdd, 1660Dep , Brumfitt 1666 PRKld, Brunfett 1669 ib, Brumphet 1672Dep . Probably 'a clearing made by burning', v. bruni (with the single Bryn - spelling reflecting the cognate OE  bryne), þveit . The later forms have a common dial. development of -thwaite to -fit (cf. Phonol. § 49).
