Etymology

Eastburn, Esebrune , Estbrune 1086 DB, Est (e )burn (e )12 Kirkst, 1285 KI, 1351 Pudset passim to 1563 WillY, Eastburne 1589, 1605 FF, 1605 PRKld. 'East stream', v. ēast , burna . Glusburn (16supra ) and Eastburn both refer to the same stream, Eastburn to the eastern stretch of it (now Eastburn Beck). But it is formally possible that Eastburn is an elliptical p.n., as Ekwall suggests, '(land lying) east of the stream' (v. ēastan ).
