Etymology

Thackray, Thakwra 1379 PT (p), Thakewray 1512 KnaresWill, 1523, 1624 TestLds, Thack (e )rey 1771 M, 1776 PRFew. 'Nook of land where thatch was got', v. þak , vrá . The site was still marked in 1858 O.S. (96–182544) but is now submerged in Fewston reservoir; the lower part of Gill Beck is still called Thackray Beck (Thackwray beck 1770 EnclA).
