Etymology

Clifton, Clifton (e )1086 DB, 1301 YI, 1386MinAcct , 1585 Knares- Will, 1617Comm et freq to 1730 PRFew, Cliftonscagh 1386MinAcct , Clifton Outhough 1518 ib, Clifton Hamlet 1739 PRFew. 'Farm on the bank', v. clif , tūn . It is difficult to keep this name apart from Clifton 56supra , but the DB forms appear to be as shown, one Clifton (the present one) being a royal manor (DB fol. 300a ) and the other being in the Archbishop's estates (fol. 303b ). The site of Clifton also is not precisely known, but Bland Hill infra is described as being 'in the hamlet of Clifton'. It is of course possible that both townships are named from Clifton 56supra , and that the archbishop's part of the estate of Clifton was linked with Newall in Upper Claro and the king's with Norwood.
