Etymology

Elsworth (lost), Elesuuorde 1086 DB, Elesworth 1301 YI, Ellesworth 1508MinAcct 70. 'Ele's enclosure', from the OE  pers.n. El (l )i and worð . This is one of the more northerly examples of worð in Yorkshire. The exact site of Elsworth is not known. The name survived as a local surname (cf. Abraham Elsworth 1650 PRFew 66).
