Historical Forms

  • Spinkeslin 1582 WillY
  • Spinckeborne 1613 Grainge
  • Spinksburgh 1771 M
  • Spinkhan Bridge 1817 M

Etymology

Spinksburn, 1703 PRFew, Spinkeslin 1582 WillY, Spinckeborne 1613 Grainge 82, Spinksburgh 1771 M, Spinkhan Bridge 1817 M. The variation in the second el. makes it doubtful whether this is in fact originally from burna 'stream', though the name Spinksburn Beck refers to a stream; the earliest spelling may be from OE  hlynn 'torrent'. The first el. is ME  spynke 'finch', perhaps used as a surname.
