Etymology

'Hēahmund's dairy-farm', v. wīc . The development of the OE  pers.n. Hēahmund to ME  Hekmund in this p.n. is unusual but is clearly paralleled by Hepmangrove Hnt 207, which has considerable variety of spellings in Heightmond -, Hetmin -, Hecme - and Eydmund - (the latter being similar to the two earliest spellings from P for this p.n.); cf. also Auckley i, 44supra . The change of Hēah - to Hek - is possibly due to French influence, as it is in the early spellings of Helmsley YN 71, where the ending -lēah appears as -lac , a form established as a pronunciation by Gaimar's rime Helmeslac -Espac (cf. also IPN 113). The later reduction to Heccunde -, mod [ekən-], has now given way to the spelling pronunciation.
