Etymology

The old townships in this parish now form different administrative units.North Bierley, Tong and Wyke have been transferred to the County Borough of Bradford (241infra ), Birstall is now part of Batley Municipal Borough (ii, 179supra ), and Drighlington of the Borough of Morley (ii, 182supra ). The remaining townships together with Hartshead (6supra ) from that part of Dewsbury parish in Morley wapentake form the Urban District of Spenborough.
