Etymology

The first element is clearly sceap, the second may be rod , 'clearing,' but as that element is not found elsewhere in Sussex it may be that the true form is rede , rude as discussed under Inchreed infra 378. rode-spellings for rude are not impossible.The meaning is the same in any case, viz. 'sheep-clearing.'
