Etymology

Ekwall gave the etymology of this name in NoB 13, 198–9, where he showed that it is a derivative of OE  fearn with the derivative suffix -iþja , hence 'place overgrown with bracken.'Mansion (Oud -Gentsche Naamkunde 80) gives a similar compound with - in Du  Farnoth , Middle Dutch Varnet and numerous places called Varent . v.
