Etymology

The variation between Ram - and Rem - suggests that this is from OE  hræfnes -leage , 'raven's clearing,' or 'clearing of a man named Hræfn ,' hraefn, leah . In view of the alternation between e and a forms it is not possible to suggest that here we have the OE  word hramse , 'ramson, wild garlic,' which we find in Ramsey (Hu), v. PN Wo xl.
