Ruffet Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Frant

Historical Forms

  • atte Riuette 1288 Ass
  • atte Rouette 1296 SR

Etymology

Ruffet Wood (6″) is to be associated with Richard atte Riuette (1288Ass ), atte Rouette (1296 SR). This is clearly the dialectal roughet (v. NED s. v .), 'rough ground overgrown with furze etc.,' and carries that word back some 300 years. It is formed from ruh in the same way as OE  þiccett from þicce .
