Etymology

Rat Fm is Rette 1219–44 Battle 8, 42, 12th (1432) Pat, 1370 Battle 81. The name seems to be identical with Rutt in Ugborough (D), atte Rytte 1333SR (p), atte Rette 1340SR (p), atte Ryte 1412Ct (p). This may be the OE  ryt , 'rubbish for burning.'
