Great Cornes
Early-attested site in the Parish of Battle
Historical Forms
- Corneres 1659 Battle
Etymology
Great Cornes (6″) may be referred to in 'Three closes called Corneres ' in 1659 (Battle 161). It is clear that the latter must be connected with the land of Cornore mentioned in the 13th cent. (Battle 20). This would seem to be a compound of corn and ora , hence, 'heron bank (or hill).' Cf. Courns Wood (PN Bk 184).
