Etymology

Breadsell Fm (6″) is Bregesele , Breggeselle 1189–99 Battle 40, 42, Breggesell 12th (1432) Pat, Bregeselle 12th Bello, Bruggeshull 1359 Battle 79, Bridgesell 1724 B. There is no stream here so the first element cannot be brycg. The second is possibly the word geselle , discussed under Buxshalls supra 340 and Professor Ekwall suggests that the first element is OE  bred , 'plank.'Hence, 'building made of planks or boards.' For the development of OE  bredgesella to ME  breggeselle , cf. OE  micgern from midgearn , orceard from ortgeard .
