Milestone Wood
Early-attested site in the Parish of Battle
Historical Forms
- Mylestone 1371 Battle
Etymology
Milestone Wood (6″) or its neighbourhood must be referred to in the grant of land 'by Mylestone ' (1371 Battle 82). A quarter of a mile south-west of the wood the 6″ map marks a milestone 55 miles from London. It appears to be only on a track but this must be part of an old road, which is referred to in the Wartling Ct Rolls (t. Hy 8) as regia via inter Mylez Stone and Duggreddegate (cf. Duckreed supra 497).
