Etymology

Smarkham Cottage (6″) is Smarcombe 1558, Smercombe 1594Onslow , Smarcam 1684 Musters, Smartham 1765 R, 1823 Br, Smarkham 1871 O.S. (6″), and was the home of Thomas and Richard de Smerecombe (1332 SR). 'Valley with rich pasturage,' v. smeoru , cumb , and cf. Smeardon (PN D 232) and Smerehulle (Limpsfield) 1312AOMB .
