Etymology

Lostiford is Lostelford 1294Ass , Losterford 1332 SR, 1370Ass (all p), Losterforde al. Lastarforde 1578FF , Lostoford 1816 O.S., Lostopher 1823 Br. Professor Ekwall and Dr Ritter suggest that this name goes back to OE  lūsþorn -ford , 'spindle-tree ford.'For early loss of n in such a compound cf. the history of the name Hatherleigh (PN D 142).
