Farthingdale is le Farendell , le Farndelle 1418Harl , la Farndelle 1429, Farindells 1784Egerton , Farndales 1845TA . This is 'bracken dell,' v. fearn , dell , the modern form being corrupt.The name is of interest as an example of the rare element dell found nowhere else in the county and only three times in Sussex.
