Etymology

Raikes Fm is la Rake 1361 Ipm, Rakelande 1562Ct , Weste , Easte Rakeland (e )c. 1575 ParReg, Rakes Farm 1838TA . This is the word rake discussed under The Rake (PN Sx 41), where it is suggested that the name derives from OE  hraca , 'throat.' The farm lies at the head of a narrow valley down which Raikes Lane (6″) runs, so that OE  hraca , first 'throat,' and then 'valley,' would suit the topography.
