Etymology

Fishfold Fm is Fissefold 1241Ass (p), 1259Ass (p), the Fyshefolde c. 1575 ParReg, Fishfold 1593 ib., Fishfull 1765 R. The name is clearly a compound of OE  fisc , 'fish,' and fal(o)d, but the exact sense is uncertain. Possibly it referred to some enclosure or the like where salted or cured fish was kept.
