Etymology

Pinkhurst Fm is Pinkehurst 1241 FF, 1279Ass (p), Pynkehurst 1305Ass (p), Pynchurst 1324 Pat (p), Pynkers t. Hy 8MinAcct .Probably 'Pinca 's wooded hill,' v. hyrst and cf. Pinkworthy (PN D 385). We might take the first element to be dialectal pink , 'chaffinch,' but there is no evidence for that usage before the 19th century. v. NEDs. v. pink sb. 6. For the last form v. Introd. xxv.
