Etymology

'Stephen's bridge', v. brycg . The first el. is the ME  pers.n. or surname Steven , Stephen ; there was a Thomas Stevens locally as late as 1598 (Comm ), and the name also appears in the local p.n. Steveneshill , Steneshille 1459, 1461MinAcct and the f.n. Stevens's (infra ).The reduction of Steven - to Sten - is paralleled by such ME  forms as sen for seven and the spellings of Sevenhampton 177infra (cf. Jordan § 216, 2, Phonol. § 34b ).
